I’ve been in the industry for over three years now (ages for some, and a blink of an eye for others), yet I keep a fairly low profile most of the time. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that conferences can be like going back to high-school in some ways. I could elaborate, but anyone who has ever been to a big conference will probably already know what I mean by that.
Long story short… I’ve learned that there are people in the SEO industry who are easy to talk to, and those that kind of give you the cold shoulder unless you have a “speaker” ribbon on. There are some who are quick to share their knowledge for free, others who are just plain cool to hang out with, a few who inspire you, some who are open to conversations with anyone and aren’t afraid to be detailed, some genuinely nice guys, a few more nice guys, and some who are so real they demand respect wherever they go.
So next time you’re at a conference and someone comes up to you asking advice, or just looking to chat and meet someone new, be sure to take a moment and listen to what they have to say. You never know what you might learn, or who you might be meeting. Secondly, if someone takes the time in the hallway, at lunch, during a session or at the bar to give you some good pointers, or introduce you to some people, do more than send them a generic Linked-In invite when you get home. Find a reason to link to them because good people deserve some link love every now and then just for being good people.

Wonder how long it will take me to rank for ‘at the bar’
