While 5.11 Tactical may be traditionally known for their tactical equipment and clothing for law enforcement officers, they have recently started coming out with many products targeted at outdoors enthusiasts – in particular the hiking. One of these recent additions is the 5.11 Coyote Boot, which is intended for hiking. I was asked to review these boots and here’s what I found…
Support
The Coyote Boot incorporates several elements to provide firm support while hiking. The boot is made from suede leather and reaches above the ankle while incorporating a heavy duty lacing system that provides. The result is great support to help mitigate sprained or twisted ankles that can occur while hiking over strenuous terrain.
Style
My wife wouldn’t wear these. And I probably wouldn’t wear them to the gym or as a day-to-day pair of boots. Despite being made for hiking, they still have that military-style to them. If you’re looking for something that is more function over form, and that will ensure your feet stay steady and warm, this shouldn’t be an issue.
Durability
The suede leather mentioned above is very rugged and will stand up to abuse from sharp rocks often found on the trails. 5.11 incorporates professional grade 1200D Cordura into the design to increase the ruggedness of the boot and to prolong its longevity. The Cordura helps repel water and provides another shield against rocks and anything else you may encounter on the trail. There is also a nice rubber layer on the toe of the boot. As the toe is often takes a significant amount of abuse from accidentally kicking objects or mis-stepping, the rubber acts as a guard to protect the leather and keep the hiker’s feet safe.
Traction
The Coyote Boot has huge tread, providing traction for most trail conditions, from loose dirt and gravel to boulders, these boots will keep you on your feet like a mountain goat. In the mud you’re on your own though (but really what boot will give you traction in mud?)
Comfort
In addition to making this boot light weight, these hiking boots incorporate a mesh fabric that help to ventilate the boot, preventing your feet from getting sweaty during use, which is a problem in many entry level hiking boots. By incorporating this mesh into areas such as the tongue and small areas around the ankle, 5.11 was able to shave off weight while retaining the durability of the boot. The Coyote Boot also makes use of perforated EVA foam padding in ankle collar and tongue to keep the support built into the boot while not adding strain to your foot. Additionally, 5.11 put a really comfortable insole into the boot to give your feet a break when you’re on the long treks.
Bottom Line
5.11 has put a lot of effort into these boots and the quality is easy to tell. They are rugged, comfy, and sure-footed. What they lack in style they make up for in functionality.
