Fitness DVDs are Sooo 2010

I have a little place next to my TV. It’s an awkward space. Reserved for relics, you may say. It’s that space that’s no longer useful but I still keep what’s there, just because it’s there.

I’m talking about the area where my stereo, CDs and DVDs live. They are collecting dust now more than getting used. But I think this is becoming a common theme in many households. As more people take the technological leap towards online streaming and the idea of internet-ready TVs and game consoles. The need for physical stereos, CDs and DVDs are becoming and certainly will be a thing of the past.

In fact the only DVDs my wife and I use anymore are our workout videos. You know, P90X, Mari Winsor Pilates, Gaiam yoga videos and the like. My wife even still fights me when I suggest we recycle her old workout videos on VHS, if you can believe that.

This was until we recently discovered that Gaiam now offers a streaming video website, GaiamTV.com. This is actually a brilliant idea on their part – and now that’s its live, I wonder why they didn’t do it sooner….

If you are not familiar with the Gaiam brand, they are leaders in lifestyle media, yoga and fitness videos to be more specific. If you’ve heard of the yoga instructor Rodney Yee, with his trademark pony-tail, than you know Gaiam. And you’ve likely seen their products in places like Target, Wal-Mart and REI. Well, they’ve introduced Gaiam TV, a new streaming video service featuring all of their top instructors – Rodney Yee, Jillian Michaels, Shiva Rea, Kathryn Budig, Mari Winsor and The FIRM. It looks as though Gaiam TV features every fitness video Gaiam has ever produced and then some.

With Gaiam TV you can stream workouts instantly to your computer, iPad® and smartphone. And apparently they are adding more devices including TVs. It’s a very cool service so far, and I think I can now convince my wife to let go of the old workout videos. As far as that awkward space next to my TV? I think it’s finally time to have that garage sale.
