A busy professional balancing fitness and health

How to Balance a Busy Professional Life with a Fitness Routine or Active Hobby

Almost every working person in a developed country will understand the following dilemma: Get up in the morning, shower, and get out the door just in time to fight traffic to work. Breakfast was just a bowl of cereal, a fast food meal, or a bagel from the breakroom. You work all day and by the time you get off, all you want to do is go home and relax - if you're lucky. If you have children or are trying to start your own business, there is no such thing as relaxing. You do the household chores, sit down for a bite to eat while watching your favorite show on TV, and get ready for bed. Do you realize the profoundly devastating effect this kind of lifestyle can have on your health? Are you, like so many others using "I'm just to busy at work" or "there isn't enough time in the day" as an excuse not to get healthy? If so, this article might help put things in perspective. You CAN balance a busy professional and home life with a regular fitness routine or active hobby. Not only that, but it will HELP you be a better boss, employee and/or parent!

The more often you work out the better you will feel, and the more productive you will become at work and at home. It doesn't take that much time. We're talking less than a few hours a week, and not every day.

One of the best ways to start balancing your work schedule with your health is to join a class at your local recreational center. This is much more "fun" than working out on your own, and provides a much-needed social outlet that many busy husbands and wives are missing out on. If you are thinking that you have been wanting to, but you just don’t have the time, think again. If you simply join the class and start going at regular intervals you will fall into a natural schedule. Trust me, your schedule WILL adapt. The house isn't going to fall apart and you are not going to get fired for spending an hour at the gym or fitness center every other day. On the other hand, if you never give yourself a chance there's now way that you'll ever be able to find a balance. Your health will gradually deteriorate, you will become more and more stressed out, and yes - eventually you might start missing a few meetings, burning a few dinners, and arguing just a bit more with your spouse. Bad health and high stress does far more damage than we think.

Even if you choose not to join a class, it is still important to put yourself on a strict exercise schedule. This takes a little bit more work to begin with because you are more likely to skip one day, and that will have an effect on your entire schedule, as well as stopping you from getting into a routine. If you have the self-discipline to put yourself on a workout routine outside of a class, then go for it, but if you are afraid that you’re going to fall behind then you'll be better off in a class.

Another misconception is that you will have to get up too early in the morning or stay up too late at night to work out and get healthy. People tend to think that getting up earlier will cause a net loss of sleep, which will negatively affect their working abilities. On the contrary, getting up a bit before you go to work and exercising will make you more awake once you get to work, and working out in the evening can be used as a cool down after work, which will help you get to sleep earlier, and have a better night's sleep in total.

If you normally come home from work and then sit down and watch television for even as little as twenty minutes, consider doing a simple floor routine while you are watching TV. Now you are being twice as productive during that time, and your entire body will feel better in the end. A few crunches while watching Lost or Heroes isn't going to kill you. Besides, it's a great way to pass the time during commercials.

Whatever your excuse is for not getting involved in an active hobby or fitness routine, throw it out the window and get started, even if only for 15 minutes each day. The key to balancing your professional life with your health is giving yourself the opportunity to do so. Trust me, the sky isn't going to fall if you take a few hours out of your week to stay fit. Of course, it will take some commitment at first to keep yourself on a regular schedule, but once you fall into the routine then it will become very easy to maintain the balance.

Check online at your local recreational center to get a list of scheduled classes that you can join, or look into getting a membership at the gym so you can work out on your own. It doesn't matter if you do indoor rock climbing, yoga, lift weights, take cardio classes, go for a jog, or learn how to mountain bike. All that matters is that you are doing something healthy for your mind and body.
