Top Ten Sports Songs and Fitness Anthems

Do you have a certain song that gets you pumped up in the gym, before a fight, or before a big game? Mine are Eye of The Tiger by Survivor, Killing In The Name Of by Rage Against the Machine, and Copperhead Road by Steve Earle, although I have plenty more. For instance, I love snowboarding to Run To The Hills by Iron Maiden. Maybe you’re like me and you use different songs for different sports / fitness situations. Copperhead Road is more of a treadmill song for me, while Rage’s lyrics “Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me…!” turned up as loud as they go ALWAYS help me get an extra ten pounds on my bench press.

Eye Of The Tiger Album for Ringtone ListI was organizing the songs in my iPod today by “activity”, which got me thinking about this blog post. I decided to take a very unscientific poll of the internet to find out what people’s favorite sports and fitness songs were. The hardest part was keeping my own favorites from topping the list and instead tallying the votes honestly. But somehow I managed, and without further ado - Here is a countdown of the ten greatest sport songs / fitness anthems ever:

10 - Queen: Another One Bites The Dust (1980)
9 - John Fogerty: Centerfield (1985)
8 - Queen / Freddie Mercury: We Are The Champions (1977)
7 - Queen: We Will Rock You (1977)
6 - Alan Courtney and Ben Homer: Joltin’ Joe Dimmagio (1953)
5 - Jack Norworth: Take Me Out to the Ball Game (1908)
4 - Guns N Roses: Welcome To The Jungle (As used by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1998)
3 - Let’s Go Mets (Official theme song of 1986 World Champion NY Mets)
2 - The Baha Men: Who Let The Dogs Out (1998)
1 - Survivor: Eye Of The Tiger (1982, as heard in Rocky III)

Honorable Mentions:
Joe Esposito - You’re The Best (as heard in the first Karate Kid movie)
Sammy Hagar - Winner Takes it All (as heard in Over The Top movie)
The Black Eyed Peas - Let’s Get It Started (radio edit of Let’s Get Retarded)
The Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop (Hey ho, let’s go!)

These are the songs we want playing on our phones in ringtones, in our iPods, on the gym sound system, in our car on the way to the game, and in the stands of the stadium when we get there. It is a testament to the love we have of our sports that there are so many great songs and anthems to choose from.

Your Best Friend Deserves to Be Fit Too

We spend a lot of time on our health because we know that it leads to a longer, more productive, happier life. I was thinking about how long I can be expected to live (based on average life spans for my age group and lifestyle) and it struck me as sad that, if I were a dog, my life would have ended before I even lost my virginity. Man’s Best Friend only lives between 12-14 years on average, and yet we tend to give them a bowl of highly-processed food made primarily from butcher-house scraps mixed with yeast, and expect them to remain happy and healthy. The dog food recalls from earlier this year prove that these mass-produced, mega-pet-store-sold bags of horse hooves all come from the same place - China.

Ivan The TerribleI’m not saying you should treat your pet like a human, serve them steak and let them sit at the table with you. But if my dog is only going to live 14 years (most likely less since I have an English Bulldog) I want that short time to be filled with fun, excitement, good food and good health. And if I can extend his lifespan by even one or two years, that would equivalent to extending mind for an entire decade! (more…)

We’ve been testing out an Amazon Storefront recently and are quite surprised at the products the system chooses to show based on what it “thinks” it knows about this website. (more…)
