Riding The Sporting Event Wave for eCommerce Sales
For our readers who sell fitness products, we’re just curious as to how Wimbledon affected your business. Did you see an increase in Tennis-related sales? I know that Tracey Lynn Golf (a women’s golf clothing line) often reports a positive impact from LPGA tournaments, and Hitwise recently reported a huge increase in search volume for Tennis-related searches due to the Wimbledon.
That people would be searching for Wimbledon and tennis players around tournament time isn’t news to anyone, but something interesting to note is that people were actually searching for places to BUY some of the tennis racket models players used during the tournament.
So whether you sell golf, tennis, soccer, football, running, cycling, snowboarding or any other type of sporting goods product - PAY ATTENTION to what the pros are using (more importantly, what gets shown on television during the sporting events, including commercials) and use this to guide your marketing efforts for that time span and surrounding weeks.
You want to create an offer around the event or brand like “10% off all X-brand products” or “Free Shipping on all Tennis Rackets” because these people are already on the verge of converting. They just watched their idols using a certain brand and are convinced that their game will improve just that little bit more if only they could get their hands on the newest model used by (insert athelete’s name). So help them out… give them that extra bit of motivation by paying attention to what you see during the event and making it easier for a browser to become a buyer.
For those of you who own sporting goods websites, the best news of all is that there is ALWAYS some sort of professional-level televised competition going on somewhere. From skiing to swimming, from tennis to golf, from soccer to ultimate fighting - Find out when the events are; pay attention to what the winners use and wear; watch the commercials; and formulate a marketing plan.
Here are some websites to help get you started:

Lastly, if you own a website in the health and fitness industry - whether you sell products, provide services or just publish content - and are not yet subscribed to this blog… Are you crazy? Just kidding. It’s late and we like to joke around. But seriously… WTF?
