Why I Get Jazzed Up About Search Engine Marketing

In response to a question from my contact form today, I decided to write down a few thoughts about why I do what I do. I would be grateful if you could read: A Word About Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and perhaps share your own thoughts in the comment section below.

What is it about SEO / SEM that makes you do this over anything else? Is it just another job for you, or is it something you feel passionate about?

I find it exciting because it’s a dynamic field. Things are constantly changing and evolving. It’s not sitting at your desk filling out TPS reports everyday. It’s trying crazy things that nobody else thought of. It’s finding that hidden gem in a pile of rubbish. It’s combining the skills of a pencil protector wearing geek, used car salesman, and three card monty con man, into a slick technology savvy marketer, who understands the customer and the market like nobody else can.

I enjoy the competition. I like to win and the wonderful thing about SEO is that the results are right out in the open for everyone to see.

Probably right up there is the intellectual challenge. What new steps can we take to nudget that pesky website up to the top?

The money doesn’t hurt either because if you are good, you get paid pretty well.

I like the passion of the people involved such as Everett :) Seriously, if you don’t have a passion in this industry you will never succeed. Working with people that have a passion is something I look for in anything I do. Whether it be a new doctor, lawyer, lawn guy whatever.

In addtion I like sense of community and sharing that goes on in the blogsphere, at industry events, forums, and even private emails and IMs.

The last thing I’ll mention is the ability to combine technical skills and business skills in one job. When I graduated college with a degree in business information systems, this is exactly what I had in mind. It took me a while to find internet marketing after going the route of software developer, but now I know I am in the right place. I have a lot more to learn, but that is another great thing about this industry. It never goes stale!

I enjoy devising new strategies and testing out various tactics! It is such an ever-changing field, you have to feel very passionate about it to succeed. Are you the type that gets excited when the new issue of “search marketing standard” arrives in your mailbox? Or visits SEM forums in your downtime? This industry needs more people like you!
