Google Acquires SearchMash for Testing User Interfaces
First reported by Danny Sullivan on Search Engine Watch
Google has acquired a new site called SearchMash, which they plan on using to test user interface ideas. According to Google, SearchMash “does not include Google branding to help us gather more objective data about user response to new interfaces”.
One of the ideas they are testing is the drop box function, in which a user clicks on the URL (not the title) and is given the option to:
open the listing in the current window
a new window
to see more pages from that web site
to find similar pages.
SearchMash also allows users to drag-and-drop web search results and reorder their position. However, the result goes back into its old position on your next search, so I really don’t see the point. Perhaps this is a prelude to some personalization feature that we might see in the future. When that happens, be sure to do This Search and move our listing from #9 up to #1. It will be most appreciated.
