Want to Linkie My Winkie?
The folks over at Linkie Winkie claim they are conducting a “social experiment“. But what they’re really doing is proving to the world that there is no end to the creativity that can be used to build link bait. And what they’re saying to the astute SEO is this:
“Linkie to our Winkie and we’ll Winkie you with a Linkie.”
So here’s my winkie, now GIMME MY LINKIE!
- - - -
My guess is that they are using Google Alerts and have set it to email them each time Google finds a new link to their site. These emails are then processed automatically by their system and the referring source is then added into the queue of sites that they link to from the home page using the title of the referring page as the anchor text.
I often get the same links over and over from Google Alerts, possibly because Google found updated information on the page that is linking to me. What does this mean? It means you may be able to get a linkie winkie more than once from the same post.
…just a theory. What do YOU think is going on over at linkiewinkie.com?

Hi! Actually, Linkie Winkie is def using a crawler, I see it visiting in my stats every now and again. I posted twice on Linkie Winkie, but it wasn’t til the third posting that I showed up on the LW site.
I had a theory that the amount of comments might have something to do with it, but that’s blown right out of the water, as there were no comments or links with my third post. :-/
I did start The Linkie Winkie Tracker to see how long it would take for the LW tracker to crawl that site. Admittedly, while I ping my own blog at the various sites regularly, I haven’t pinged that one much, so perhaps I ought to try that to see if I can attract the LW crawler’s attention…or maybe it’d be good for me to just leave it and see if it ever finds it. Do come and leave a link there as well! I’m hoping that blog will tell us if the crawler makes links or only works off search engine findings…
Also, the LW owner has apparently visited the Tracker, so might be worth the visit.
have a good one!
