Automatic URL Rewrites: non-www to www and index.html to .com - Instructions on How to Fix Canonical URLs.

What are Canonical URLs?
When a web site has two or more versions of a URL for the same page. For instance, here are FOUR different ways to see a home page: http://www.yoursite.com, http://yoursite.com, http://www.yoursite.com/index.html, and http://yoursite.com/index.html . See the four differences? (more…)

Fun, Free Advertising For All

I found a new toy online that I wanted to share with our readers. It is called Wikimapia and I just can’t get enough of this site.

First of all, it allows me to find the directions and recommendations to places all around the world. If I go on a trip to a conference in New York, for instance, I can find my hotel, and see selections of restaurants, coffee shops, bars, bookstores… all around the hotel. I can read what people have to say about them, see their address, phone numbers and much more. It is a cross between the user-driven community involvement of Wikipedia and the accuracty and usability of Google Earth Maps all rolled into one neat website.

Okay, aside from the cool factor, why should you be concerned about this web site and what does it have to do with marketing your health and fitness business online? Did I mention that getting your business listed here is FREE! Not only that, but YOU get to decide what description to use, what page on your website to link to, which phone number to give out… There is no charge, no need to sign up, and - at the time of this writing - virtually no competition.

There will be plenty of competition in the near future, but as of June, 7th (today) if you go to http://www.wikimapia.org/ and search (there is a drop down list if you hover your mouse of the Wikimapia text in the upper right corner bar) for any of the following keywords/phrases: “Colorado chiropractor,” “Denver chiropractor,” “Denver chiropractic,” “Colorado chiropractic” our client (http://www.denver-chiropractic.com/) is the ONLY listing in the entire world! In-fact, even searching for a generic word like “chiropractor,” Denver-Chiropractic still shows up as one of the only two sites listed in the entire world! Of course, the competition will grow as this site’s reputation grows, but if you use the following tips for your listing, it will stay above the rest for a long, long time.

Tips for Listing your Business on WikiMapia:
(click on the show info link on the denver-chiropractic listing to see this in action)

  1. Include the entire website URL (including http://www.) in your description.
  2. Include your address and phone number in the description.
  3. Include at least five but no more than twenty keywords.
  4. Include your location City, State, Area in the keywords field.
  5. Check back from occasionally to make sure nobody has sabotaged your listing.
  6. Remember, like Wikipedia, anyone can edit a listing. That’s the point of the site.
