Mariel Hemingway Oprah Book Club Review: Living from the Inside Out

Oprah Hemingway BookOn a recently filmed Oprah, Mariel Hemingway talks about her new book: Living from the Inside Out.

Now, I am certainly not the typical Oprah Fan type of person. For one, I’m a guy. Furthermore, I tend to be in the office while Oprah is on. But I did manage to read a bit from Mariel Hemmingway’s book and I found the message to be truly interesting and valid. Here’s the point, if I can boil it down this far:

Listen to Your Own Body. Nobody knows your body as well as you do, so if you go to a doctor and he/she says nothing is wrong, yet you “feel” like something is wrong… Chances are that you are right, despite his/her years of medical school. So get a second opinion. Or a third, for that matter. And this advice doesn’t just apply to doctors. Friends, family, strangers on the bus… everyone seems to have their own opinion about what YOU need and how to heal YOUR body. But the truth is that everyone is different, and we have been taught to ignore our own intuition and put 100% complete faith in those who we consider “authorities”. But when it comes to you and your own body – guess who’s the real authority?

I love Mariel Hemingway, but not as much as I love Oprah. These are two very inspirational women and the book is a real eye-opener for me. We’ve been taught not to trust our own bodies and instead to see a doctor about everything. Half the time doctors just want to dope you up and get your out of their face so they can continue with their revolving door procedures.
